Another musician I had been working with had written most of the first verse. I got the chords together and took over the writing. We recorded it live, one take. The ‘Diamond Smuggler’ was just learning to play the keys and I love the slightly clumsy and unique approach he takes. I was dealing with the loss of my brother and sister at the time and tried to pour everything into my vocal.
